Karen is a local young women from Lobitos, Peru who we first met in 2009 when she was just a grom. Girls growing up in Lobitos generally lack a safe space for self-expression. While most girls quit surfing after succumbing to mounting pressures from home, Karen stuck to it. Practicing with the local boys, Karen became an emerging talent in the lineup. Karen started teaching the younger boys how to surf and since, won a scholarship to attend university in Lima, Peru where she teaches surfing to tourists on the weekends. We've supported Karen through her journey over the years with opportunities to share her story and continue her journey of transformation. Karen's dream is to return to her native Lobitos, mentor more girls to start surfing just as she did, and use her degree to the village's well-being into a sustainable future.
